CSD in Easy Language (English)

On September 13th 2025 Wuppertal will celebrate CSD

What is CSD/ Pride? -in English

© Lebenshilfe für Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung Bremen e.V., Illustrator Stefan Albers

People all over the world demonstrate and celebrate at Pride.
Pride is about the rights of LGBTIQA*+ people.
LGBTIQA*+ means:
● Lesbian people: These are women who love women.

● Gay people: These are men who love men.

● Bisexual people: These are people who love both men and women.

● Trans people: These are people who were assigned a gender at birth, but that gender feels wrong to them. Many trans people take medication and change their gender through surgery.

● Intersex people: These are people who have physical sex characteristics of both men and women. They may not feel like a man or a woman, or they may feel like both.

● Queer stands for all LGBTIQA*+ people. (Queer is pronounced like: kwier.)

● Asexual people: These are people who have little or no interest in sex.

The plus sign + stands for the many other people who are also queer.
The **asterisk *** is used to show that we mean all people.
It’s not only about men or women.
It’s also about people
● who don’t feel like a man or a woman,

● or who feel like both a man and a woman.

You can recognize inclusive words by the little asterisk * — for example: helperinnen* in German.
In this text, we often write: queer community or queer people.
By that, we mean all LGBTIQA*+ people.

CSD

CSD / Pride
At CSD, queer people demonstrate together with others for:

●      Queer people having the same rights as everyone else.

●      Queer people being able to live freely and safely.

●      All people respecting queer people.

CSD is also a celebration.
The queer community proudly shows:
This is how we live, and this is how we love.

About the history of CSD/ Pride

CSD is named after an uprising in the USA in 1969.
 It happened like this:
In New York City, some queer people lived.
But they could not live freely and safely.
The police often went into bars and places where queer people met.
They arrested queer people and were often brutal.

On June 28, 1969, the police wanted to arrest queer people in a bar again.
That day, the queer people fought back.
It turned into a large uprising.
The bar was on a street called Christopher Street.

The full name of CSD is: Christopher Street Day.
That means: Christopher Street Day in English as well.
So, CSD is named after the uprising on that street.

Today, CSD takes place in many countries.

Stand up for the rights of queer people

The queer community demonstrates for their rights.

All participants line up.

The marshals provide information about the rules for the demonstration.

At a rally, people give speeches on various topics.

At a rally, the focus is on the fact that there are increasing attacks on queer people.

The topic is: “Nationwide increase in attacks on queer people.”

Everyone goes together to the second rally.

At a rally, the focus is on the fact that many queer people experience being treated worse than others.
 This is called discrimination.

The rally addresses discrimination in schools, universities, vocational training, and the workplace.
The topic is: “Discrimination in school, university, training, and work environments.”

Everyone goes to the final rally.

At a rally, the focus is on:
